PATRIOT TRANSPORTATION HOLDING, INC. ANNOUNCES ELECTION OF DIRECTOR AND CHAIRMAN OF AUDITING COMMITTEE

Jacksonville, Florida; October 3, 2002 - Patriot Transportation Holding, Inc. (NASDQ-PATR) at its October 2nd, 2002 Board of Directors Meeting announced that H. Jay Skelton has been elected as a Director of the Company and appointed chairman of the Audit Committee.

Mr. Skelton is President and CEO of DDI, Inc., a diversified family holding company based in Jacksonville, Florida. He is the former managing partner of the Jacksonville office of KPMG Peat Marwick. He is also President of the Pablo Creek Club in Jacksonville.

Mr. Skelton brings to the Company's Board of Directors a distinguished record of service within both the business and civic arenas of the greater Jacksonville community.

Patriot Transportation Holding, Inc. is engaged in the transportation and real estate businesses. Its primary operating transportation subsidiaries are Florida Rock & Tank Lines, Inc., a Southeastern transportation company concentrating in the hauling by motor carrier of liquid and dry bulk commodities; SunBelt Transport, Inc., which serves the flatbed portion of the Southeastern trucking industry and Patriot Transportation, Inc. which concentrates on the third-party agent/owner-operator segment of the industry.
